Shanghai · local tips
Payment
Alipay and WeChat Pay are accepted everywhere. International cards linked to both apps work at 95% of merchants. Keep ¥200-300 cash for small street food stalls.
Transport
Metro is English-friendly with clear signage. Line 2 connects PVG airport to city center in ~1 hour. DiDi (Chinese Uber) has English interface — much easier than hailing taxis.
Language
Younger Shanghainese often speak basic English. Download Google Translate offline Chinese pack. Hotel concierge can write destinations in Chinese for taxi drivers.
Food
Shanghai cuisine is sweet and oily. Must-try: xiaolongbao (soup dumplings), shengjian (pan-fried buns), hongshao rou (braised pork). Tap water is NOT drinkable.
Safety
Shanghai is very safe for tourists. Main scam: "tea ceremony" invitations from friendly strangers near the Bund — politely decline.
